MCU - 10 Ways Avengers: Endgame Sets Up Phase 4 & Disney Plus
1. Will Phase 4 Even Have An Avengers Movie?
Iron Man and Black Widow are dead. Captain America is old. Thor is off finding himself. Hawkeye seems just about ready to retire. Of the original Avengers, who this movie focuses on, the only one who might return for a team-up is Thor, but there are other things to do with him first (whether that is Siege or Asgardians or something else).
The other characters, too, all have their own journeys, to be explored in various sequels, with the slate over the next few years already filling up even without Marvel officially pencilling things in.
The film, then, leaves us without an Avengers team, which for a film called Avengers: Endgame feels rather apt. There's certainly no sort of Initiative anymore, and that means the MCU could and likely will take a good few years off from the name, to let the dust settle and allow the hype to build.
Avengers 5 WILL happen at some point, because it's far too valuable a brand. But after Endgame, it's best not to rush it, and there's no discernible story reason for the next few years either. They could potentially even go all of Phase 4 without an Avengers movie, instead building up their new heroes, and introducing the Fantastic Four and X-Men at some point, before kicking off Phase 5 with an almighty bang in around 2024-25. Even if it is Phase 4, it doesn't feel like we'll be seeing the Avengers until maybe 2023 at the earliest (which would be the longest gap yet between Avengers movies).
