MCU: 12 Things You Learn Rewatching Captain America: The First Avenger

10. The Romance Is Surprisingly Affecting

The MCU has had a persistent problem with romance over the years, but the doomed love story between Steve (Evans) and Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell) remains the most interesting and convincing to date.

For starters, it doesn't feel lazily forced down the audience's throat, and the tragic nature of the romance - that it could never be realised - makes it entirely counter to what we usually expect from love stories in movies such as this.

A good deal of character work is put into the romance, and so it's easy to believe why these two would be attracted to one another. The closing "I had a date" line legitimately stings because the script put in all the necessary effort ahead of it, and it of course paid off affectingly with Peggy's demise and funeral in Civil War.
