MCU: 12 Things You Learn Rewatching Iron Man
10. Terrence Howard Is A Better Rhodey
There's nothing wrong with Don Cheadle as an actor - in fact, he's very good in a lot of things - but his take on James Rhodes from Iron Man 2 onwards is as a sort of goofball best friend who is as cocky and boastful as Tony at his worst. Particularly when he's got his hands on the War Machine armour and is a full-blown Avenger.
Terrence Howard's Rhodey is by far the superior of the two: his is a more nuanced performance and his dynamic with Stark makes more sense. He's more like a permanently annoyed best friend who is torn between his affection for his buddy and exasperation at his capacity for self-destruction.
He's also a more believable military man and though there have been rumours of him being difficult to work with, the performance is one of the most under-rated parts of the early days of the MCU.
