MCU: 12 Things You Learn Rewatching Iron Man

6. Tony Should Die (Twice)

So, Tony Stark obviously isn't a superhero in terms of his genetics and isn't in any way invincible, which is sort of his whole shtick. The point of his heroism is that he's nothing more than a man with a genius intellect and untold wealth - he's the pinnacle of human achievement, but that's it: human and no more.

With that in mind, it's astonishing that he can survive being thrown through the air in a heavy metal armour suit and smashed back to earth from a great height and at great speed. Physics, biology and possibly also chemistry suggest that would be impossible without him turning into mince, even while landing on sand.

But more notably, when Tony has Pepper change the arc reactor in his chest to the more powerful unit, he asks her to make sure the live wire inside doesn't touch the edge of the casing, lest he be shocked. She fails and he buzzes like Operation, before she removes the magnet that the arc reactor is powering to keep the shrapnel away from his heart. Naturally, he almost goes into cardiac arrest, but she solves it by putting the new arc reactor into place.

Except, that's not right. She never puts the magnet back in place, so he essentially as an arc reactor powering absolutely nothing in his chest (he said the magnet was not to be removed, after all). He should have died a long, slow death without that magnet in place and yet somehow he's absolutely fine.
