While the likes of Batman and Superman have fictional cities like Gotham and Metropolis to be the guardians of, Spider-Man has always been firmly rooted in the culture of New York City.

In fact, the furthest Sam Raimi and Marc Webb’s respective series veered away from Manhattan was Peter’s childhood home in Queens, but Homecoming (and to a lesser extent, Civil War), proves just how much there is to get out of putting the wall crawler in different environments.

Hell, in his latest film Spidey doesn’t set foot in Manhattan at all, and a big chunk of the action takes places in Washington DC.

Now he’s part of a larger universe, the filmmakers are free have him travel outside of his comfort zone, which ultimately does a fantastic job of distinguishing this version of the superhero from Sony’s previous incarnations.
