The Scene

After the Battle Of New York, which has just seen thousands of people killed, The Avengers head to a shawarma joint to deliver on Tony Stark's line about the nice shawarma joint around the corner after he flies the nuke through the wormhole.

The team sit around shell-shocked, silently eating the restaurant's wares as the staff clean up damage from the battle.

What It Meant

Very little, really, but that was the point. This marked the start of more gag post-credits scenes that wouldn't necessarily have wider ramifications for the MCU.

Whedon revealed that the scene was inspired by Angel episode A Hole In The World when Fred dies. Apparently, after they completed filming that scene, actors Amy Acker and Alexis Denisof "went out for drinks and ended up just sitting around quietly, exhausted from the day's events."

The scene was filmed on April 12, 2012, he day after the world premiere, and Chris Evans had to wear a prosthetic chin to cover his beard. And while it might not have meant much narratively, it did boost shawarma sales in Los Angeles, St. Louis, and Boston in the period following its release.
