The Marvel Cinematic Universe as we know it began with Iron Man. When Tony Stark was taken prisoner by the Ten Rings and he and fellow captive Yinsen were forced to create the first power suit, the MCU as we know it began.
Stark decided that instead of creating weapons of mass destruction to sell, he would instead focus on what he could create to save the world; soon announcing to the public that he was Iron Man.
Iron Man became the linchpin for much of the MCU. He was one of the founding members of the Avengers. Stark began working with Nick Fury and other heroes to ensure that Earth could be protected from the threats of the Universe - even taking on a villain that Stark had a hand in creating.
