For the first three phases of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Tony Stark's Iron Man was built up as the ultimate hero. A genius billionaire who, following being kidnapped and almost killed by his own weapons, Tony decided to focus on the good he could do in the world.

Stark was a natural leader whose engineering ability allowed him to create some of the smartest pieces of technology ever seen, including his various Iron Man suits. Still, Tony's huge ego often meant he was unable to see beyond his own plans. Often butting heads with Captain America, the Armored Avenger wasn't perfect, but he was one of Earth's greatest protectors.

There seemed to be nothing Iron Man couldn't defeat... until Thanos came along.

An all-powerful villain on a mission, Thanos believed the only way to save life was wipe out half of it. His beliefs made him seek out the Infinity Stones to achieve his goal with a click of his fingers. For a spell, it seemed Thanos might have finally achieved his life's work, until Iron Man and the remaining Avengers found a way to change the past, and Tony sacrificed himself to finally defeat the Mad Titan.
