MCU: Ray Winstone Is No Fan Of Comic Book Movie Saturation
It's better to have a bit more content.
There are a few actors you wouldn't want to mess with. If Vinnie Jones was trying to convince you on the finer points of a particular political policy, you'd probably just accept what he was saying. If Jim Brown was telling you to change your entire lifestyle on a whim, you'd pack up and do as you're told.
Ray Winstone exists in a similar mould, playing notoriously tough characters and making a career out of hard-men side characters with a specific line on intensity. He made his name in the likes of Scum and criminal TV show Fox, Winstone was a youth boxer from a council estate who hung up his gloves to concentrate on acting, so he knows a bit about being hard.
He's also not that much of a fan of the over-saturation of comic book movies.
Appearing on British magazine show Soccer AM, Winstone was talking up his new film - Brit-grit boxing film Jawbone (co-starring American Gods' Ian McShane and the brilliant Johnny Harris - and spoke up the project passionately. It stars Harris as an alcoholic boxer
The reality of that film is that it won't be as widely seen as it probably deserves to be, not least because of the cast (music legend Paul Weller is also scoring it), but because it's a different beast entirely to what dominates the box office these days.
You get the sense that has crept into Winstone's frustrations about the current marketplace:
"[Jawbone is] really about Britain today. It's got a social message I guess, which is the films I started doing years ago. There's not many films like that today... we've got Marvel films, X-Men and all that - which is fine, I love watching them, but not every day, you know. It's nice to go back and see something with a bit of content."
He also candidly talked about taking jobs for money - which he called "slightly soul-destroying" - and bigged up the film, which absolutely deserves your attention when it hits cinemas briefly on May 12th and follows on DVD on June 5th.
