MGM developing Stigmata 2?

31.jpgMGM are said to be working on a sequel to that "less successful" end of the world movie from 1999, the Gabriel Byrne starrer Stigmata. The movie took in $93 million worldwide which was still a tidy sum but it was of course severely overshadowed by the Arnold Schwarzenegger star vehicle End of Days which took in $211 million worldwide. Gabiel Bryne starred in that movie too. He obviously was having a demonic year back then. Anyway, there isn't much to go from Shock Till You Drop apart from the fact that a sequel to Stigmata is in the works, but it's not yet known if it will be a theatrical one or whether it will continue the more likely trend of the low budget straight to dvd route.
The original, directed by Rupert Wainwright (The Fog), told the story of Frankie Paige (Patricia Arquette), a young woman suffering from stigmata, and the conflicted priest (Byrne) sent to investigate this funky phenomena.
Now both End of Days and Stigmata weren't all that great but for what they were I found End of Days way more fun and entertaining than Stigmata... although the latter was clearly the more interesting and superior film. Whether it's on dvd or in my cinema though, I won't be seeing a sequel to it.
