Morbius Review: 3 Ups & 7 Downs

7. The Dull, Generic Script

Morbius Jared Leto
Sony

By far the worst thing about Morbius is its script, which shouldn't be all that surprising given that it's written by Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless, whose prior work includes Dracula Untold, The Last Witch Hunter, and Gods of Egypt.

Despite the obvious entertainment potential for a vampiric superhero, Morbius ends up feeling like a dead-ordinary example of both a superhero origin story and vampire film.

The basic beats of the plot aren't anything you haven't seen countless times before, and to make matters worse the dialogue is frequently bogged down in tiresome, transparent exposition.

It's frankly baffling that Sony signed off on such a low-effort, ramshackle screenplay, when a character of Morbius' popularity clearly deserved better.

There is very little wit to the dialogue, the characterisation is bog-standard, and the plotting bears all the simplicity of a more primitive superhero film from two decades ago.
