Morbius Review: 3 Ups & 7 Downs
5. The Incredibly Dated CGI
One of the most common criticisms against both Venom and Morbius is that they feel like superhero movies from the early 2000s, and in Morbius' case that's perhaps felt no more obviously than with its rancid visual effects.
While it'd be unreasonable to expect mega-budget VFX from a film produced on a $75 million budget, the sub-par quality of the effects are still pretty embarrassing for a production of this scale.
The jerky, floaty movement during action sequences, goofy CGI vampire faces of both Jared Leto and Matt Smith's characters, and absurdly muddy VFX during the final battle all suggest a movie made on a far lower budget.
Though the smoke-like trails to Morbius' movements are mildly neat, they're the only remotely compelling effect in a film full of repellent visual "flourishes."
