Mortal Engines Review: 3 Ups & 7 Downs

2. Junkie XL's Pulse-Pounding Musical Score

Mortal Engines

If you watch this movie and get the sneaking suspicion you've heard that triumphantly aggressive musical score before, that's likely because it's composed by Junkie XL, who previously created an extremely similar score for Mad Max: Fury Road.

Though it gets dinged a few points for basically dining out on Fury Road's success, Junkie XL's work here does nevertheless have a power and heft to it, doing its absolute best to elevate even the movie's most mediocre sequences.

Without his thrillingly energetic musical work, the movie would likely be even less of a thrill to watch. But if he gets hired to score any more post-apocalyptic movies in the future, he should probably cool it with the Mad Max drums.
