20 Most Anticipated Movies of 2027
9. The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum
Because The Lord of the Rings is an IP well that just needs to be mined until the heat death of the universe, of course there's another live-action blockbuster in the works - though in fairness, Tolkien's fans have a tendency to be absolutely insatiable, hence the film being on this list.
The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum is set between The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings trilogies, and also during The Fellowship of the Ring, focusing on Strider (Jamie Dornan) as he hunts down Gollum (Andy Serkis).
Andy Serkis directs a film that intriguingly unfolds from Gollum's perspective, while Ian McKellen, Elijah Wood, and Lee Pace are confirmed to be reprising their respective roles as Gandalf, Frodo, and Thranduil.
Elsewhere, the cast will include Kate Winslet, Leo Woodall, and Anya Taylor-Joy.
Even accepting the dubious necessity of another Rings movie and Serkis' so-so track record as a director, The Hunt for Gollum is nevertheless one of the buzziest films of next year.
The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum releases December 17, 2027.
