It goes without saying that the overwhelming majority of horror movies are concerned with death in one way or another, whether being centered around the presence of ghosts or having a masked killer slaughter a group of hapless, horny youngsters.

And while most horror movie deaths aren't all that surprising, given the genre we're talking about and all, every so often a death scene manages to catch every single one of us totally off-guard.

Perhaps the death comes with a brutal abruptness in the middle of a totally unexpected scene, or maybe we all thought the character in question would survive to the end, ensuring these deaths were all basically the cinematic equivalent of being slapped around the face with a wet fish - hard.

These 20 horror movie deaths got the element of surprise totally perfect, ensuring nobody watching would likely soon forget what they'd just witnessed, while also ensuring that all bets were off for the remainder of the film's runtime.

Shock value deaths can risk coming off cheap and lazy, but when they work, they really work...

20. Terry - Final Destination

Final Destination Terry
New Line Cinema

The Final Destination franchise sure loves to shock viewers with deaths that happen totally out of nowhere, often as a result of misdirecting the audience to expect something else entirely.

But the most brilliantly surprising death still belongs to the very first movie, where poor Terry (Amanda Detmer) starts chewing out her boyfriend Carter (Kerr Smith) for harassing protagonist Alex (Devon Sawa).

Yet just as she tells Carter he should "drop f**king dead" and blindly walks out into the street, she's creamed by an oncoming bus, her bloody remnants splattering Carter, Alex, and teacher Mrs. Lewton (Kristen Cloke) in the process.

It's a perfectly executed jump scare that comes totally out of nowhere yet also doesn't feel cheap.

It's precisely the sort of everyday accident that could befall anyone, and yet by happening to one of the film's characters, it only bolsters the anxiety that, yes, Death is coming for each of the Flight 180 survivors.
