10 More Sequels That Totally Ruined The Previous Movie's Ending
1. Basically Everything - Pacific Rim: Uprising
And finally, Pacific Rim: Uprising isn't merely a disappointing sequel - it's one that seemingly goes out of its way to disrespect basically everything that people liked about the first film.
Guillermo del Toro's Pacific Rim ended with the interdimensional portal known as the Breach being sealed up, but most importantly, it cemented the bond between protagonist Raleigh Becket (Charlie Hunnam) and his Jaeger co-pilot Mako Mori (Rinko Kikuchi).
And while it was hardly a shocker when the kaiju threat returned in Uprising, the sequel bafflingly benched Raleigh without explanation - while a prequel novel reveals that he died of cancer between movies.
As for Mako? She shows up for a brief supporting part before being maddeningly killed in a helicopter crash caused by a rogue Jaeger, ensuring both well-liked leads of the first film are taken out in short order.
Our new protagonist is meanwhile Jake Pentecost (John Boyega), the son of Stacker Pentecost (Idris Elba) from the first film, who is effectively recontextualised here as a deadbeat dad.
And if this all isn't insulting enough, Newt (Charlie Day), the comic relief sidekick from the first film, ends up one of Uprising's primary villains after his mind becomes controlled by the extraterrestrial Precursors.
It is a film that puts an impressive amount of feet wrong after the first movie set such a firm, charming foundation. Just... why?
