10 More Sequels That Totally Ruined The Previous Movie's Ending
5. Gale Writes Another Trash Book - Scream VI
Whatever you make of Dewey's (David Arquette) polarising death in the fifth Scream film, it did at least provide some meaningful character development for his ex-wife Gale (Courteney Cox).
At film's end, she vows not to write a book about the Ghostface killers this time around, denying them fame and instead penning a tribute to Dewey.
That's considerable growth for a character who has been a relatively one-note - if thoroughly entertaining - opportunistic media personality throughout the franchise.
But by the time Scream VI rolls around, Gale's growth has been more or less walked back, as it's revealed that she's back on the sensationalist news beat and did indeed write a book about the previous film's killers despite promising not to.
On one hand, Gale has been a consistently self-serving person throughout the franchise, and you can argue that she effectively returned to old habits as a grief-stricken coping mechanism.
But on the other, after five movies of Gale basically doing the same exploitative thing, it was about time to change things up, and so many fans were left disappointed that her potential growth was undone.
It'll certainly be interesting to see how Gale is featured in the upcoming seventh movie, though it'd be foolish to expect much different from the usual.
