20 Movies That Could've Been Horror Movies

8. 50 First Dates

50 First Dates Adam Sandler Drew Barrymore
Columbia Pictures

The Drew Barrymore and Adam Sandler-starring rom-com 50 First Dates is a very sweet film about a man (Sandler) who discovers that the object of his affection (Barrymore) is an extreme amnesiac destined to forget him every night when she falls asleep.

The film takes a very earnest approach to the ensuing unlikely romance, even if 50 First Dates' premise is one that's inherently rife with horror film potential.

After all, if one half of a romantic pairing can't retain information beyond a single day, they're open to being wildly manipulated by the other party. For one, how does the notion of consent even exist for a person like this?

And even if Sandler's protagonist were a well-meaning individual as he appears to be here, can you imagine the trauma of waking up every single day and seeing that both yourself and the people you love are now drastically older than you remember?

Plus, given that the film ends with the duo having a daughter, waking up heavily pregnant seemingly out of nowhere is an unimaginable blend of existential and body horror.
