Mulan Review: 6 Ups & 4 Downs

1. Jet Li's Distractingly Dubbed Role

You wouldn't be blamed for failing to recognise Jet Li in the role of The Emperor of China, with the martial arts legend donning feature-concealing facial hair to play a role that, surprisingly enough, doesn't ask him to beat anyone up.

And while that's no big deal, it is extremely peculiar that Li's dialogue has been very obviously re-dubbed during post-production.

Though his role in the film isn't particularly large, every time he's on screen the bad ADR job draws considerable attention to itself, making it tough to take his character seriously or even pay basic attention to what he's saying.

It's tough to think of why this decision was made: Li's English may not be the best, but he's certainly been totally understandable throughout his Hollywood career.

These gripes aside, though, Mulan mostly works, and here's everything it gets right...
