Mulan Trailer Reactions: 5 Ups & 2 Downs
1. The Supporting Cast
We hear and see very little of the supporting cast in this initial teaser trailer yet from what we do see, they are sure to prove an asset to the film. A short glimpse of Tzi Ma as Mulan's father, Hua Zhou, masterfully demonstrates the actor's ability to convey the gentle authority of a father full of pride and who only wishes the best for his daughter.
Cheng Pei-Pei's Matchmaker also makes a short appearance in the teaser trailer. Largely a humorous character in the animated film, Pei-Pei's Matchmaker seeks to ground the character as the film's representation of traditional femininity. 1998's Mulan clashed with The Matchmaker over her clumsiness and lack of grace but this new take seems to suggest that the woman Mulan is expected to be and the warrior she yearns to be are not mutually exclusive.
It's very little to go on but already, each character seems to represent something more which is only strengthened by the demonstrated power of the supporting cast who are sure to prove to be an invaluable addition to the film upon its 2020 release.
And now on to the negatives...
