Mute Review: 4 Ups & 6 Downs
2. The Totally Pointless Justin Theroux Subplot
No spoilers here, but there's an eyebrow-raising subplot in this movie involving Justin Theroux's character that just feels wildly unnecessary.
It's sure to be Mute's most controversial and debated element, a thoroughly unsavoury aspect of his character that feels tacked on in order to reinforce that, as if it isn't clear already, this guy's not exactly a kosher dude.
While Jones could've found a way to give this subplot a substantial payoff by film's end, he instead settles for something much lazier and less interesting, likely leaving you wondering why he threw something so gross and left-field into the film at all.
