NBC's THE OFFICE scribes writing GHOSTBUSTERS III
Movie being written with the intention of reuniting the original cast.
So it's official, Ghostbusters III is about to be scripted. It's happening, just like I kept telling you guys it would. Columbia Pictures have hired Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky, the co-executive producers onNBC's version of The Office to write an original script for the film that will have the intention of reuniting Bill Murray, Dan Ackroyd, Harold Ramis and Ernie Hudson for the first time since 1989's Ghostbusters II.
As well as writing the excellent U.S. version of The Office, the writing duo have also just wrote Year One, the biblical comedy which Harold Ramis himself recently helmed for Judd Apatow. You can read the story in Variety! Just this week Ackroyd had mentioned his desire to get Judd Apatow, Seth Rogen and their gang involved in the picture in someway, something many fanboys have anticipated happening for about a year now. Could this new movie act as a farewell to the original cast and as a set-up to carrying on the franchise with Apatow's gang, which could well involve Rogen, Paul Rudd and presumably Steve Carrel, who of course just so happens to be the star of The Office. Will Ivan Reitman, the helmer of Parts I and II and who last directed My Super Ex-Girlfriend in 2006 be in line to return to the director's chair? Would his son, Juno and Thank You For Smoking helmer Jason Reitman be interested in helming? Maybe Ramis (who is pretty established behind the camera) or Apatow himself? Someone new entirely? What will the plot be? Has or will Murray really decide to return after so many years of declining offers? Do Columbia think it's profitable enough (stumbling block for a Part III in the 90's was the amount of places that own the rights to the series) to make their money back... though I do think this will be one of the highest grossing movies of whatever year it is released if they can secure the whole original cast. I know it's wrong but I can't help but be excited. As I said this morning, Ghostbusters is a staple of my childhood. I know every beat, every change in tone, every word of dialogue... its' one of my favourites of all time. It's impossible for me not to smile to know the original cast are being lined up to return.
