Bad Lieutenant is shaping up to be one of the weirdest movie franchises of all time.

The original 1992 Harvey Keitel-starring crime drama about a corrupt police officer was followed up by a somehow even more unhinged 2009 spiritual successor, Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans, starring Nicolas Cage and directed by Werner Herzog.

And that really seemed to be the end of it, but almost 20 years after the second film, a surprise threequel is on the way.

Bad Lieutenant: Tokyo is another standalone sequel in the series, this time starring Shun Oguri as a strung-out Tokyo cop who teams up with an FBI agent, played by Lily James, to investigate the disappearance of a politician's daughter.

But here comes the really exciting part - the new Bad Lieutenant will be directed by the esteemed Takashi Miike, who has proven time and again that there are few better filmmakers to tackle the elevated Yakuza crime thriller.

Expect this to be one for the sickos, and anything less would simply be a crushing disappointment.
