20 Recent Movies EVERYONE Knew Would Suck

14. The Bride!

THE BRIDE JESSE BUCKLEY

Maggie Gyllenhaal's ambitious failure of a sophomore feature, The Bride!, had to contend with a huge wave of negative PR long before it finally came out.

Reports repeatedly detailed the difficult production of the Bride of Frankenstein reimagining, beginning with Netflix choosing to depart the project during development as its budget ballooned from $65 million to $100 million.

Test screenings were said to be disastrous, and while these audiences are rarely the arbiters of good taste, it spoke to a wider narrative about Gyllenhaal producing an incredibly non-commercial big-budget film which saw her come into conflict with Warner Bros. over the final cut.

More transgressive scenes were eventually cut and extensive reshoots were conducted, all while the film was repeatedly delayed, ultimately releasing in March 2026 - some two years after it began filming.

And while Gyllenhaal's movie is a big, bold swing of a vision, it's also one that's more frustratingly incoherent than laudably daring.
