Nick Nolte: 5 Awesome Performances And 5 That Sucked

4. Tom Wingo - The Prince Of Tides

Far better than the mother's weepie its poster might suggest it is, The Prince Of Tides is a languid study of cultures colliding, pasts being unearthed and blocked love - it's also the complete showcase of Nolte's acting talents. As Tom Wingo, a southerner with secrets, Nolte digs deep to deliver a performance brimming with reluctance, regret and longing. Under the generous direction of helmer and co star Barbara Streisand, he carries this role with old-fashioned charm and very little grizzle, showing some serious thesping chops in the film's surprising finale. Nolte's skills didn't go unnoticed with him being nominated for an Oscar, only to watch Anthony Hopkins steal the prize at the 64th Academy Awards for his iconic turn as Hannibal Lecter.
