Ocean's 8 Review: 5 Ups And 4 Downs

3. There's Little-To-No Real Tension

Oceans 8

For a movie about a heist where so much could go wrong at any time, Ocean's 8 has very little tension. Throughout the pre-planning stages and during the plan itself, little things would go wrong here and there.

However, they were extremely minor things that were quickly fixed once a character did something minor, leading the plan to continue as expected without consequences. This led to the movie feeling very predictable and like nothing could go wrong for the group, leading to the inevitable end result being far more predictable than it should've been.

In the previous films, it's true that there was rarely any doubt Danny and the boys would succeed in each of their ventures. However, what made those films so engaging was the way they'd be forced to improvise. With any substantial stumbling block, the gang would adapt and work this potential problem into something different with little time to brainstorm. Here, the problems had are less intrusive and far easier to remedy.

This ends up removing any and all doubt that Debbie and the gang will succeed in their venture as almost everything goes perfectly to plan. It effectively robs all tension from the film, leading to a heist movie without any real thrills.
