Moviegoers in Liverpool demanded a refund after they made the not so surprising discovery that silent movie The Artist had no dialogue. It€™s like going to the Ritz only to find out and be in utter despair about the fact that there are no Big Mac meals. The Awards lauded film depicts the €œGolden Age€ of cinema, an industry in the transitional stage between silent film and the €œtalkies€ that historians noted began with Al Jolson€™s The Jazz Singer in 1927. It is in this context that The Artist protagonist George Valentin, played by Jean Dujardin, finds himself following Charlie Chaplin€™s ethos of sticking to the world of silent cinema that he knows best, whilst Peppy Miller (Bérénice Bejo) is propelled to stardom in the exciting world of the talkies. Film-goer Nicola Shearer, 25, was asked at the entry of Liverpool Odeon One if she knew the film was silent. She told The Telegraph: "Of course I knew it was and I asked the usher why she wanted to know. "She then told me some people complained and asked for refunds because there is no sound and the screen is smaller.€ We are glad Nicola saw the humorous side of this question as she €œthought it was really funny and laughed€. After initially denying claims of refunding customers, an Odeon and UCI Cinemas Group spokesman said: "Odeon Liverpool One can confirm it has issued a small number of refunds to guests who were unaware that The Artist was a silent film. "The cinema is happy to offer guests a refund on their film choice is they raise concern with a member of staff within 10 minutes of the film starting." The Artist, directed by Michel Hazanavicius has received critical acclaim. The Telegraph€™s Robbie Collin described the film as €œravishing, heart-warming and utterly beguiling€, whilst Phillip French from the observer has hailed it as a €œfully achieved work€and a great leap forward.€ WhatCulture! called the movie 'A winning hilarious homage to 1920s silent cinema' in our extremely positive first review out in Cannes. The film recently won three Golden Globes including the award for Best Motion Picture €“ Comedy or Musical. A quick word of advice for moviegoers in the €œEuropean Capital of Culture€, read a synopsis to avoid any further disappointment as a result of dialogue devoid films.
