Okja Review: 6 Ups & 3 Downs

1. The Visual Effects Are Incredibly Hit & Miss

Though the titular creature looks pretty great for the most part, there are a few ropey moments where the movie's budgetary constraints are apparent, as was also the case in both The Host and Snowpiercer.

For instance, when Jake Gyllenhaal's zoologist Dr. Johnny Wilcox first meets Okja, he runs his hand over the animal's hide and it's incredibly obvious he's being composited against a digital element. There's also a car chase later on with some rather suspect green screen elements that distract from how thrilling the sequence otherwise is.

As lovely as the movie looks overall, it absolutely would've benefited from having a little more cash thrown at the visual effects, which do let the rest of the pic down a bit.

Still, overall Okja is a highly entertaining effort, so here's everything it gets right...
