Okja Review: 6 Ups & 3 Downs
5. Tilda Swinton, Jake Gyllenhaal & Paul Dano Are Fantastic
Though not all of the impeccable ensemble cast are able to truly make an impact, there are three easy stand-outs who provide fantastic support throughout.
Tilda Swinton, who unforgettably played the antagonist in Snowpiercer, gives another marvelously chameleonic performance here as the CEO of the Mirando Corporation, though there's much more to both her character and performance than the trailers have given away.
Then there's Jake Gyllenhaal, who essentially goes full Nicolas Cage as a highly-strung zoologist and TV personality looking to enhance his already considerable profile by working with Okja.
And finally, there's Paul Dano, who as animal rights activist Jay doesn't play a total creep for once, and like Swinton's character is much more ambiguous and stereotype-averse than you're probably expecting.
Though Swinton and Gyllenhaal in particular are largely absent from the middle of the movie, the trio of actors get fine material especially in the movie's second half, and absolutely deliver accordingly.
