One Night In Miami Review - 8 Ups & 0 Downs
3. Regina King's Direction
1367965Regina King has had a good few years on our screens, first winning an Academy Award for her role in If Beale Street Could Talk, second for her incredible leading role in Watchmen, and now third for her powerful direction of One Night In Miami.
Her delicate, yet commanding touch permeates the film and gives the viewer a real sense of what it was like to be in the room and stand with these giants. It takes skill to be able to viscerally bring across what the heart of four leading characters is saying, but she does it with grace and humility.
Never does King allow the camera to become lazy either, always keeping her subjects together and in shot by using mirrors, or by clever movements that immerse you in the film further.
Nor does she allow any of the characters to dominate the room. It would be easy for Ali to use his size and swagger, just as it would for Malcolm X to use his reasoning and justification, but this is not what they are doing here and King never lets the actors or the audience forget that.
