Onward Review: 6 Ups & 4 Downs

3. A Lot Of The Humour Falls Flat

Onward Pixar

As reliably as Pixar has mastered the art of spoken witticisms and charmingly creative sight gags, humour is a major area where Onward just doesn't feel up to the studio's usual standard.

The banter between Ian and Barley, though jovial enough, is disappointingly broad, smacking of first draft material that needed a few more passes before being passed off to Holland and Pratt.

There's nothing offensive or cringe-worthy about the jokes, but they just come across as oddly low-effort, while the physical gags similarly lack the uproarious punchiness or ingenuity you'd expect.

Onward didn't need to be a laugh-a-minute romp to succeed, but there are often long stretches between truly funny moments, which is a real shame.
