1. Judy Dench - Best Supporting Actress (Skyfall)
Though it was great to see a lot of recognition for Silver Linings Playbook - and a lot of it rather unexpected, I have to admit (though not unjust) - the fact that Jacki Weaver was included rather than Skyfall's matriarch seems outrageous. Yes, it was a Bond film, but neither the type of film nor the type of performance should discount any performances from receiving the praise they deserved (though Andy Serkis has already felt that particular icey dagger already.) When she first began as M, I found Dench to be a little too purse-lipped and stoical, a girl-power infused grumpy old woman with too much of a point to prove, and a slightly jarring dynamic with Bond. But then when Daniel Craig came in, Dench's performances seemed to get an awful lot better, and in Skyfall she offered her most complex and layered yet as the head of MI6. Quite why she was overlooked entirely is beyond me. Which other performances, films or directors should have been on the list of nominations for this year's Oscar ceremony?
