Oscar Nominations 2019: 6 Ups & 9 Downs

3. Snubbed: Burning For Best Foreign Language Film

Though Lee Chang-dong's searing mystery drama made the nine-film shortlist for the Best Foreign Language Film Oscar back in December, it sadly didn't land South Korea a spot as one of the final nominees despite Burning being one of the year's best-reviewed films, foreign language or not.

In total fairness, Best Foreign Language Film is a stacked category this year, but considering that Burning's critical response was decidedly more effusive than that of nominees Capernaum and Never Look Away, it's a damn shame the singular drama wasn't given the rub.

This is a category that routinely snubs worthy films, but it's extra galling in the case of Burning as it clearly made it so damn close to actually being nominated.
