Oscar Nominations 2024: 8 Ups & 9 Downs
4. SHOCK: Godzilla Minus One (Best Visual Effects)
Another historic Oscar moment now, with Godzilla Minus One receiving a Best Visual Effects nomination and in turn becoming the first Godzilla movie in the series' 70-year history to be recognised by the Academy.
It's an especially satisfying result given that the acclaimed monster movie was produced for a mere $10 million budget.
And yet, the Academy has deemed its effects worth contending with much larger-budget Hollywood productions - The Creator, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning, and Napoleon.
While The Creator is the pretty decisive favourite to win this award, if the Academy likes Godzilla Minus One enough to nominate it, there's every possibility it pulls an upset on Oscar night. Either way, the nomination is basically the win for this movie.
