6. Star Wars - $775 million
I can't believe this movie's only made three quarters of a billion dollars. It's been in theaters multiple times, and there are a lot of nerds out there. And I know those people aren't only seeing this movie once. A point of contention many have about the year Star Wars was nominated was that it lost to a goofy romantic comedy. But because that romantic comedy was the great Annie Hall, truly one of the best films ever made, I can't argue with the Academy's decision at all. Lucas I'm sure will cry himself to sleep on his gigantic piles of money, then go swimming in his Uncle-Scrooge-style pool of gold coins.
5. E.T. The Extraterrestrial - $792 million
In his second film about aliens, Steven Spielberg took the youthful wonder and awe of Close Encounters' Barry one step further with E.T. In the moving story of an unlikely friendship between a boy and a lost extraterrestrial, we learn to care for this weird-looking creature. Reese's pieces have never been the same. E.T. ultimately lost to Gandhi, the story of a similarly peaceful, small and quiet man, a fitting film for the gentle alien to lose the award to.
