Oscars 2013: 5 Potential Upsets That Might Occur

1. Robert De Niro Beats Tommy Lee Jones & Christoph Waltz For Best Supporting Actor

jackie brown deniro samuel l. jackson This is the one upset I€™m feeling very confident about. The other award shows have been all over the place with this category. Tommy Lee Jones has won the Screen Actors Guild award while Christoph Waltz has won the Golden Globe and BAFTA. De Niro has zero major awards to his name this awards season. Then why am I ready to make a fool of myself by predicting De Niro may take home his third Oscar? Well, De Niro is one of the greatest actors of his generation, maybe ever. He hasn€™t won an Oscar in over three decades and has not been nominated for an Oscar in more than 20 years. De Niro was overlooked for fine work in movies such as Goodfellas, Casino, A Bronx Tale and The Good Shepherd. His performance in Silver Linings Playbook is perhaps one of his greatest. He encapsulates the role of an elderly, sports-obsessed gambler so well but imbues it with a humanity and sincerity not seen in his other roles. He represents the father archetype incredibly €“ a mixture of toughness with a layer of sadness and love for his ill son. This mixture is one that hasn€™t been present in his work for quite some time. Just watch the scene when De Niro€™s character explains why he always wanted to watch €œthe game€ with his son €“ truly wonderful work. De Niro is reclusive and generally doesn€™t go to smooch for awards. However, he has been doing the rounds and is very proud of this project. This along with many industry friends can allow De Niro to pull an upset this upcoming Sunday. In the end, I believe you€™ll have three €œ3€™s€ €“ Day-Lewis€™ third Best Actor Oscar, Spielberg€™s third Best Director Oscar, and De Niro€™s third Oscar overall.
