2. Amour - Best Foreign Film
No contest in this category. Amour is the clear-cut favourite barring any unforeseen circumstances. This unforeseen circumstance is if Amour pulls off a MASSIVE upset and is awarded Best Picture (which is still very possible), otherwise Amour destroys the competition in this category. Amour, the French film from Austrian filmmaker Michael Haneke, is a harrowing, touching, heartbreaking film about love and old age, and is arguably the best film ever to be made about the subject. Critics and Academy members all LOVE this film, which is backed up by its nomination for Best Picture. Very rarely does a foreign film get the Best Picture attention that Amour has received, and for good reason. The Artist was a French film last year, but its one line of spoken dialogue was in English, technically making it an English language film, whereas Amour is all in French. Michael Haneke also got huge recognition by being nominated in the Best Director category for his delicate, tender approach to the subject matter. This film has proven to be a serious contender in the Best Picture race, which all but assures its win in the Foreign Film category. If Amour doesn't win Best Foreign Film, buckle-up because the Best Picture category is about to be shaken up.
