1. Best Picture: Moonrise Kingdom
Written and directed by Wes Anderson, Moonrise Kingdom managed to accomplish a feat that hadn't gone fulfilled in eleven years: be a live-action Wes Anderson movie that didn't suck. His seventh film, Moonrise Kingdom has put Anderson back in the discussion of the great directors of the current generation. Taking cues from the disillusioned youth of the cult hit Rushmore, Moonrise Kingdom transcends the cynicism of earlier Anderson works to become one of the most upbeat and optimistic movies made in recent time. The pre-teen co-leads thrive as Suzy and Sam, the love-lorn couple who are each in their own way from broken homes. Despite violent outbursts and a touch of pyromania, the precocious duo dare the audience to wonder if love can be allowed to exist in this dark and dreary world. Or, shy of that, how a 12-year-old girl managed to become such a skilled combatant with a pair of lefty-scissors. As this year's Oscars come and go, it's important to keep things in perspective. In the year 2013, we still have such a long way to go in terms of other important injustices that have plagued not just the Western World, but the entire world as a community. Because at the end of the day, dear readers, it's not important that the Hollywood elite have decided to throw another party for their rich and famous brethren. What's important is to remember that the real tragedy of present day, the heartbreak of the modern man who is just trying to figure out his place in the vastness of the universe, is that these idiots thought that Les Miserables was one of the best movies of the year. I mean, c'mon.
