5. The Hunt - Mads Mikkelsen, Best Actor
The Hunt is a Danish film from director Thomas Vinterberg, set in a small village and following a man who is wrongly accused of sexually assaulting a child. Mass hysteria then systematically ruins his life as he's shunned by the community before the ostracism turns to violence. Mikkelsen impressed audiences as the villain in Casino Royale, then shocked us all by playing a better Hannibal Lecter than Anthony Hopkins on NBC's Hannibal series. The Hunt has been receiving accolades since it screened at the Toronto International Film Festival and Cannes Film Festival. Mikkelsen has been nominated several times for his performance, and won at Cannes. The film has also been selected as the Danish entry for the Best Foreign Language Film category at the Academy Awards, and now the question remains whether or not Mikkelsen will be given a best actor nomination. Considering how many more mainstream, English-language performances wowed audiences this year, chances are he'll get snubbed. I'm not saying it's impossible for him to get nominated, but it's a pretty stacked deck this year and there may not be room for him in the 5-slot category.
