Oscars 2014: 10 Movies The Academy Should Consider (But Won't)
3. Man Of Steel - Best Score, Best Visual Effects
Man of Steel will go down in infamy as the most debated and divisive film of 2013. Opinions on the film have been scattered all across the board, some praising it for being a great Superman reboot, others claiming it completely disrespects the character. No matter where you stand in terms of how you reacted to the movie, you should be able to appreciate the film's incredible effects and booming Hans Zimmer score. As far as the effects go, the Academy didn't even include the film in their consideration shortlist. This is a bit puzzling considering just how imaginative and downright awesome a lot of the visuals were, and it seems that voters decided against adding fuel to the fire of controversy. Is it possible to give a film an award for showcasing massive destruction? Absolutely, they've done it before and will most certainly do it again. But for some reason, when it comes to Man of Steel, people can't stand to see a couple buildings fall over. As for the score, there's no word yet on how voters feel about what Zimmer brought to the table. He was faced with an incredible challenge, having to update the Superman music for a new generation, while attempting to step out of the legendary shadow left by John Williams. If you ask me, I'd say Zimmer did an incredible job, making a score that was not only epic and booming at times, but infused with science fiction elements that added a sense of dread and creepiness to some of the Kryptonian battles. He also managed to give the Last Son of Krypton a theme that was both hopeful and heroic. We won't soon forget the iconic score Williams composed decades ago, but Zimmer has given us something that may just be even better.
