Oscars 2014: 18 Sublime Moments That Define Best Picture Nominees

7. Her Lip Quivered - Her

The love between Theodore and Samantha occasionally veers in some highly uncomfortable directions, paving the way for some truly warped scenes. This awkwardness reaches its apex when our virtual lovers decide that it's time to get physically intimate, which is achieved by hiring a woman who is willing to act as a surrogate body for their sexual pleasure. Quite possibly the creepiest aspect of this is that the surrogate never talks, but only reacts to the voice of Samantha. Theodore eventually realizes this too after an accidental lip quiver throws his mindset off balance, and then decides he can't go through with the simulated intercourse. And just when things felt like they couldn't possibly get any stranger, the surrogate has an emotional breakdown, claiming that she only wanted to be a part of the beautiful relationship Theodore and Samantha share. It's tough to even wager which aspect of the entire scene is most awkward; a man pleasuring his OS via surrogate body, or the fact that the surrogate body actually feels that she can experience love this way, but that's what makes Her so fascinating. Spike Jonze explores some heavy themes regarding relationships in the age of technology, and the eye-opening results make for some disturbingly beautiful scenes.
