Oscars 2014: 5 Things In Defense Of The Academy Awards

4. We Will Never All Agree

As is evidenced by every single comments section on every single website ever, it is impossible to make something or do something that will please everybody. So when you're making such a large decision as what was the best movie of the year, and you have tens of millions watching, there's going to be tremendous displays of unhappiness, no matter how good the movie was that you just awarded. Case in point: I loved Lincoln, and thought for sure it was a shoo-in for all the most prestigious awards. It won two, one of which was for Production Design. To put that in perspective, Steven Spielberg's brilliant and powerful biopic of one of the most important historical figures of all time received as much love from the Academy as a James Bond movie. On the other hand, I hated Life of Pi. Hated hated hated. I was incredibly upset that it won Best Director for Ang Lee. Meantime, some of my friends thought it was the best movie of the year, and were incredibly upset when it did not win Best Picture. At least we can all agree Paperman deserved the award for Best Animated Short. Right?
