Oscars 2014: Gravity vs 12 Years A Slave

10. Special Effects

Let€™s just get one obvious category out of the way first. I have no doubts that some fancy filmmaking techniques went into depicting the brutality of 12 Years A Slave so barbarically, and that the occasional scene may have been slightly enhanced with some CGI, but - c'mon - its competition is Gravity. Cases have been made that Gravity is the greatest cinematic technological achievement in decades and that it has truly evolved blockbuster cinema - which quite honestly has stagnated into the same repetitive techniques and style €“ and those bold statements couldn€™t be any more truthful. It also utilises 3D in ways that should put every other film out there to shame; specifically the 36 movies a year that claim to have the greatest 3D ever since James Cameron€™s Avatar. There hasn't been a 3D experience quite like this one - the sensation of all that space debris closing in on you goes unparalleled. It's actually challenging to imagine watching Gravity without 3D. Winner: Gravity
