Oscars 2014: Gravity vs 12 Years A Slave

6. Music

On the surface, 12 Years A Slave feels like a shoe-in, due to having its original score composed by the talented Hans Zimmer, but it€™s actually not that memorable of a score in hindsight. It€™s definitely dialled back from his recent blockbuster compositions, crafted with much more subtlety, and is a score that hits all the right emotional beats throughout the duration of the film, but lacks a truly memorable piece. Apparently, the Academy agrees too as Zimmer was not nominated. Instead, it€™s the songs - both from the slaves and ruthless owners - that still stick out in my mind. They merge together with the narrative in a way that fits the film more, whereas Zimmer€™s score is just a step-up from his recent cacophonous loud noises. Even with that in mind, it still feels rather standard and uninspired. Winner: Gravity takes this round without a shadow of a doubt; that entire ending sequence showcasing Ryan€™s (Sandra Bullock) emphatic and climactic return to Earth is heightened by an unforgettable piece. It€™s an ending that signals the audience to breathe again - that the rollercoaster ride is, indeed, over.
