Oscars 2014: Gravity vs 12 Years A Slave

4. Story

Gravity is often labeled as all style and no substance, which is something of a loaded statement that cuts the story too short. It€™s clear that the only real storytelling lies in its symbolism and motifs of rebirth, but it€™s also just enough to work for the style of experience it is. Sure, the arc regarding Ryan€™s deceased daughter feels slightly unnecessary, but it also serves as the driving force behind her choice to not give up living, and to survive at all costs. In other words, it's just enough to make us hopeful for Ryan's survival amidst nonstop peril. 12 Years A Slave, on the other hand, is a sincere and unflinching adaptation of a free man sold into slavery. Couple Solomon€™s pain and suffering with the characters he crosses paths with along the way and you have one of the most harrowing and horrifying stories ever put on screen. It€™s a film that has the gall to ask us how we could be so cruel to one another at one point in time. Winner: I don€™t think anyone in their right mind would argue Gravity has a better story than 12 Years A Slave. It€™s simply an unforgettable achievement and one of the most emotionally devastating films ever made.
