Grown Ups 2
Release date: July 12 Oscar prospects: When hell freezes over (and even then, pretty doubtful) Ha...Haha......Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha I seriously considered leaving it there and moving on to the next preview, but that seemed to a little derelict in duty, even with Grown Ups 2. I usually hate to be so flippant, but for some inexplicable reason, I actually saw the first Grown Ups, which makes the prospect of watching more mind-numbing antics from the group of middle-aged comedians beyond some absurdist, Kafkaesque nightmare. As easy as it may be to bash Sandler and his low-brow style of comedy, I actually used to be a fan. I still defend his earliest work, which is undeniably stupid, but also has just the right mix of awkwardness and edginess to make the proceedings intriguing. Sandler, on the rare occasion, has also proven to have some genuine acting chops in films such as Paul Thomas Anderson's Punch-Drunk Love and Judd Apatow's Funny People. Grown Ups on the other hand, is complete and utter garbage, and its sequel will undoubtedly be the same. I was going to look up the film's synopsis, but really, what's the point? If the synopsis was sincere, it would read something like, "Enough idiots were willing to see Adam Sandler, Chris Rock, Kevin James, and David Spade in a movie together once, so you know, here they are again. Now gives us your Goddamned money." Needless to say, Oscar prospects are slim on this one. Possible nominations: Worst Picture (category doesn't currently exist, but Grown Ups 2 may necessitate its creation).
