Will Win: 12 Years A Slave Should Win: 12 Years A Slave Surprise Win: Captain Phillips If you know anything about the Oscars, then you know that 9 times out of 10 the film that wins Best Editing goes on to win Best Picture. So in this case, it will be 12 Years A Slave that wins the Best Editing award. The editing is not something that stands here as much as the cinematography or the production design, but it is particularly effective during the more brutal scenes in the film, so it's a very good example of film editing and one of the stronger recipients of the award in recent years. If there's a surprise winner to take the trophy, which is highly doubtful this year, it will be something that hasn't got a chance elsewhere- namely, Captain Phillips. Greengrass' films are always very well-edited, and his latest is no exception. If the other 3 nominees are going to take everything 12 Years A Slave doesn't, then Captain Phillips will at least get this, in compensation for Barkhad Abdi's unfortunate loss to Jared Leto.
