Oscars 2014: Predicting The Winners

Best Leading Actress

Will Win: Cate Blanchett Should Win: Amy Adams Surprise Win: Sandra Bullock From the first screening of Blue Jasmine, it was obvious the Cate Blanchett would be nominated. Now the inevitable has happened, it would be a shock if she didn't win Best Actress. Blue Jasmine hasn't quite had the impact of Woody Allen's Midnight in Paris on academy voters, but Blanchett is still going to win. However, it'd be nice if Amy Adams won- she deserved Best Supporting Actress for her turn in The Fighter over the showy Melissa Leo. American Hustle is essentially a film about weak, worthless men being outsmarted by strong women, and Adams' performance is equal parts charming and complex. A terrific performance and a far less obvious choice. She's one of America's best actresses working today, and there's always a chance Blanchett might not get it. However, with Gravity set to lose out to 12 Years A Slave, it will likely hog a ton of other awards, and Sandra Bullock might just win again- if she does, it will be for a career-best performance and a damn sight better than The Blind Side. So long as it isn't Meryl Streep that wins (this will be her 18th nomination), anyone who picks it up will be deserving.
