Oscars 2014: Ranking The Best Actors From Worst To Best

1. Matthew McConaughey - Dallas Buyers Club

There are actors that have turned their careers around, and then there's Matthew McConaughey; the guy utterly despised for taking a paycheck in any cliche-ridden, nausea-inducing cheesy romantic comedy he was offered, but woke up one day and said "What the heck am I doing with my career, I'm an amazing actor and I'm going to go prove it to the world". Naturally, the majority of us were skeptical, but then something happened. The Lincoln Lawyer was released in theaters and to the surprise of moviegoers around the world, McConaughey was simply great in it. Ever since then has been delivering more fantastic performances in films such as Killer Joe, Bernie, and Magic Mike. 2013 was the year when the McConaissance was kicked into high gear though, as he delivered three outstanding performances in three equally outstanding films (Mud, The Wolf of Wall Street, and Dallas Buyers Club). He received his nomination for Dallas Buyers Club in a role encompassing everything all the other four nominees had going for them. There's a pretty drastic shift in physical appearance which saw McConaughey lose a significant amount of weight to wholly adopt the persona of a deathly ill, occasionally awful but nonetheless sympathetic character. All that comes across as one hefty character transformation, that sees McConaughey's AIDS-stricken character Ron Woodroof go from an unlikable homophobic to an upstanding game-changer in AIDS awareness. His touching friendship with a transvestite business partner €“ excellently done by Jared Leto €“ also adds a great layer to the overall character development. Not only would Matthew McConaughey winning complete one of the biggest career turnarounds in existence, it's also something he deserves for an unforgettable performance in Dallas Buyers Club's Ron Woodroof.
