Oscars 2015: 10 Movies That Should Be Nominated For Best Picture

1. Interstellar

Even with a decent take of over $180 million domestically, in the eyes of Hollywood, Interstellar was a disappointment. The lowest grossing film of director Christopher Nolan's career since 2006's The Prestige, Interstellar was an unfortunate victim of its own hype. Going off into the far depths of science fiction, Interstellar's meditative tone proved to be too much of a departure from Nolan's recent action oriented films to be widely embraced by the masses. This is truly a shame though, because outside of The Dark Knight and possibly Memento, Interstellar is the best film of Christopher Nolan's already impressive career. The film tells the story of an astronaut, Cooper (Matthew McConaughey), who must journey through a worm hole in hopes of finding a new planet for the human species to colonise. With Nolan's dedication to practical effects, Interstellar is an absolutely beautiful film that captures the majestic sense of space exploration like no film before it. At times recalling the cosmic sequences of Terrence Malick's The Tree Of Life and Andrei Tarkovsky's science fiction masterpiece Solaris, Interstellar's reverence for the vastness of space and time and humanity's place in it infuse the film with an almost melancholy quality. Many critics badgered the film for its supposed sappy "love conquers all" message, but Interstellar never really engages in such trite thematic statements. The real heart of Interstellar is not "love conquers all" but "love is all we have", a much more wistful and beautiful sentiment that is delivered with the utmost sincerity. Despite its technical marvels and touching narrative, Interstellar will probably not receive nominations from the Academy outside of a few technical categories. Regardless of what the Academy says, however, Interstellar was the best film of 2015. Which films do you think the Academy should nominate for Best Picture? Let us know in the comments section below.

A film fanatic at a very young age, starting with the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle movies and gradually moving up to more sophisticated fare, at around the age of ten he became inexplicably obsessed with all things Oscar. With the incredibly trivial power of being able to chronologically name every Best Picture winner from memory, his lifelong goal is to see every Oscar nominated film, in every major category, in the history of the Academy Awards.
